Background information:

Ernest^10 Van Vickle
(Calvin^9, Robert^8, Enoch^7, Evert^6 Van Vickle, Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 2 January 1889, Buckman, Morrison County, MN and died 19 December 1989, Pillager, Cass County, MN, buried Wildwood Cemetery, Pillager, Cass County, MN. He married on 9 October 1912 (in St. Cloud, MN) Cressie Mae Bridges (b. 13 May 1895, Albion Twp, Wright Co.,MN; d. 2 December 1977, Brainerd, Crow Wing Co., MN; bur. Wildwood Cemetery, Pillager, Cass, MN). Cressie is d/o of George Abercrombie and Nettie Ann (Heaton) Bridges.

Note: Cressie's father, George, and his sister were the first white children born in the Dakota territory. His father, Mark Matthews Bridges, was serving in the Army at Ft. Abercrombie. Chief Sitting Bull wanted to adopt one of the children and became quite upset when Mark and Eliza refused to let him have one of their children. Of course, it probably didn't take much to anger him as the soldiers were there to contain the Indian uprisings. -from Dorothy Williams email 21 March 2001

Note on Ernest^10 Van Vickle in 21 March 2001 email from Dorothy Williams (Ernest's granddaughter): My grandpa was born on January 2, 1889 in the cold Minnesota weather. He weighed less than three pounds and they put him in a man's handkerchief. I was told they used a small box for his cradle and placed it on the oven door of the old wood stove just to keep him warm. Grandpa was never sick a day in his life, and only went to the hospital after Grandma died. He was about 89 at the time. He had some stomach surgery, maybe it was appendicitis--not sure. He lived to be short of 101 by two weeks. he was a FINE gentleman and everyone loved him. Grandma, on the other hand, was very outspoken, but they made a great couple. I was very close to both of them and wish I had them here now to tell me more about their families.
